Before we proceed to enumerating the home remedies people have used through the years to battle the symptoms of sinus infection, let us first identify what sinuses are and what they’re for.
For starters, sinuses are nasal functions that help filter the air we breathe, making them moist and warm enough to help us resonate and enunciate particular sounds better. If we have problems with our sinuses, it is likely that we will be unable to communicate effectively and experience some sort of numbness on our faces.
We will be able to identify if we’re experiencing a sinus infection via these three key indicators: 1) the loss of our sense of taste and smell, accompanied by bad breath and recurring nasal congestion or blockage; 2) the extension of an annoying cold to more than a week, coupled with toothache, some pain in the face, cough, headache, postnasal drip (or grayish or greenish nasal mucus), and fever; 3) vomiting and escalated irritability, especially among children, because they feel the urge to expel the mucus that has been clogging nasal passageways.
As we can obviously see, sinusitis is not a walk in the park. However, it’s not really as grave as we think, if we know how to take care of it from the onset of the attack. How do we do this? Here are home remedies we can use.
1. Drink plenty of water and fluids, and get lots of rest. It is suggested that you sleep on your side when you do so, because lying on your back might only clog your nasal cavities even more and increase the discomforts and pain.
2. Don’t drink cold drinks. During a sinusitis infection, hot liquids, like tea, is recommended.
3. Hold a wet and warm towel against your face or breathe in steam by hunching over a basin of warm water. Humidifying our nasal cavities will help declog the mucus that has built up and allow you to breathe more normally. Or, if you have one, you can use to humidifier. Either way works fine. Do this around twice to four times a day for about ten minutes each time until your sinuses clear up.
4. If you are to use a nasal spray or a decongestant, avoid using it for more than three days. If the symptoms do not go down after three days, you might be sporting something else and need to talk with your doctor.
Realize that not all over the counter drugs that promise to give relief for sinus infections are right for you. Thus, before you take any medication, consult your doctor first to see if you’re allergic to it or not, or if it’s the right drug for your particular situation.
Sinus relief can already be obtained using a home remedy if you’re alert and combat it at the onset. Since you already have an idea what the symptoms of sinusitis are, this shouldn’t be too difficult to address. Sinusitis is not really a deadly disease. It is chronic, yes, but it is curable. Therefore, it’s always best to be preventive than reactive. Stay away from dry and cold environments and keep a healthy lifestyle. If you smoke, then you better stop smoking. Also, avoid substances that may potentially be allergens. An ounce of prevention is always better than a pound of cure.
